The instructional shifts of literacy are the breath and life behind all college and career readiness standards. Having high-quality instructional materials is the first step, but understanding each shift in depth, noting what it should look like in a thriving classroom and how those materials are built from these shifts along with what they look like in our daily instruction will take our curriculum and instruction to the next level. The shifts are shifts we must see not only from our students but from our teachers and the materials they use. Understanding the shifts and how the EL curriculum was designed with these in mind will allow us to place more of the why behind our beautiful work.
