What happens when students previously learned a calculation trick or a mnemonic that does not contribute to long-term understanding? “Rules” that appear to change from year to year, from teacher to teacher, or from school to school can make mathematics seem disconnected. This session will identify and use clear and consistent mathematical language, representations, and rules across grade levels. Let’s “Nix the Tricks” and avoid “rules that expire.”
