As an elementary educator for over 30 years, she speaks on various topics related to math identity, math content, instructional practices, and literacy connections to mathematics. Deborah recognizes that many students, educators, and parents have unaddressed math trauma and varying levels of anxiety when it comes to mathematics. Blending her training in yoga and mindfulness with mathematics instruction, Deborah advocates for a mindful approach to teaching mathematics to address math anxiety, build confidence, and support the development of positive math identities. She has dedicated her career and doctoral studies to supporting educators with innovative teaching strategies that allow students to be curious problem-solvers and see themselves as assets to the learning community. Deborah believes all children deserve joyful math experiences and the opportunity to become competent readers, writers, and mathers.

This session centers instructional coaching aimed at empowering educators with research and evidence-based practices in reading instruction. This session will equip coaches with tools and strategies to enhance their support for teachers, offering a comprehensive overview of the Science of Reading. Gain insights into implementation strategies, and explore a process for instructional rounds to elevate teaching practices focused on high-quality instructional approaches.
Research tells us that the instructional materials teachers use with their students can dramatically accelerate learning. The adoption of high-quality instructional materials presents a unique opportunity to empower educators to use the curriculum as one of many tools for equity in the classroom. However, if the adoption and implementation of high-quality instructional materials occur without a deep and nuanced understanding of a system’s unique context, there is a real danger of the initiative passing without making a significant impact. Professional Learning Communities (PLCs) can help to create opportunities for collaborative intellectual preparation to support system-wide curriculum implementation and coherence, beyond just “buying the book.”
In this session, NTC will spotlight the work it has done with Charlotte Mecklenburg Schools (CMS) and Albuquerque Public Schools (APS) to create equitable learning environments by supporting teachers to leverage the curriculum through student-centered pedagogy. Rich discourse in mathematics classrooms is most likely realized through intentional teacher planning, anticipation of future classroom interactions supported by quality instructional frameworks and supports. The 5 Practice Charts in Open Up High School Mathematics are the tool for supporting teachers in planning, anticipation and implementation of discourse that promotes deep understanding. This session will focus on the charts, what they are, how to use them to best support student learning.
This session will investigate the progression of the ratio and proportion standards in 6th and 7th grade, and how they lead into the linear relationship standards in 8th grade. Participants will utilize multiple representations (including double number lines and ratio tables) to address the standards. Participants will gain strategies to address unfinished learning regarding proportional relationships.
Place value is second nature to us as adults, but what do students feel and experience when making sense of this system? In this session, we will work with unfamiliar numbers to put ourselves in learners' shoes and reflect on the challenges and key components of counting, naming, and grouping new units. We'll examine OUR K-5 Math tasks and the Standards to understand how place value builds and develops across grades.
Take a hands-on dive into different instructional routines. Discover keys to implementing these strategies effectively. This session will provide teacher and student tips and resources to open up our minds to the purpose and pride of teaching instructional routines with intentionality.
Setting the right foundation for mathematical discourse requires building upon three important types of routines in any math classroom: Collaborative, Continuous, and Instructional. Participants will leave with a list of ideas to support Open Up Math, social/emotional and culture building activities to implement throughout the year, and instructional routines (both math and non-math) that promote community and build math identity.
